DURING THE TENURE OF EMMETT SHAY AS SHERIFF OF SAN
BERNARDINO COUNTY, A GROUP OF HORSEMEN BANDED
TOGETHER AS A POSSE.  MANY RIDES WERE ENJOYED ALONG
THE "RIM OF THE WORLD" IN THE SAN BERNARDINO
MOUNTAINS.  THESE RIDES WERE FIVE DAYS LONG WITH THE
CAMP AND COOKING FACILITIES MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION
EVERY NIGHT.  SERVICE WAS IN THE GRAND STYLE AND AS
MANY AS 100 RIDERS WERE IN ATTENDANCE.  THE GUESTS
CAME FROM ALL PARTS OF CALIFORNIA AND THE RIDES WERE VERY
PRESTIGIOUS AFFAIRS!  THE GROUP WAS IDENTIFIED AS "RIM OF THE WORLD
RIDERS".

IN THE FALL OF 1946, MR. STOCKER DEFEATED MR. SHAY FOR SHERIFF AND THE
ORIGINAL GROUP OF RIDERS WAS DISBANDED.  HOWEVER, THE SPIRIT OF GOOD
FELLOWSHIP, GREAT FRIENDSHIPS AND GRANDEUR OF THE TRAILS IN THE AREA
REMAINED IN THE HEARTS OF MANY.

IN THE EARLY PART OF 1947, A SMALL GROUP OF RIDERS DECIDED TO PURCHASE
THE EQUIPMENT OF THE FORMER ORGANIZATION WHICH WAS OFFERED FOR
SALE.  THIS PROMPTED MEETINGS AMONG THE INTERESTED PARTIES AND
BY-LAWS WERE FORMULATED IN APRIL OF 1947.  THERE WERE 27 CHARTER
MEMBERS* THAT SIGNED THE BY-LAWS, INDICATING THEIR ACCEPTANCE OF
THE PROVISIONS THEREIN.  THESE REQUIREMENTS BECAME APPLICABLE TO
EACH NEW MEMBER THEREAFTER.

THE ORIGINAL BY-LAWS ESTABLISHED THE NAME "RIM OF THE WORLD RIDERS
OF SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY".  ALSO, THE BY-LAWS SET FORTH, "THE OBJECT
OF THIS ORGANIZATION SHALL BE THE PROMOTION OF GOOD FELLOWSHIP
AMONG ITS MEMBERS WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE OUTDOORS AND
THE ENJOYMENT OF OUR TRAILS AND HIGH COUNTRY THROUGH THE MEDIUM
OF FREQUENT HORSEBACK TRIPS."

THE FIRST RIDE OF THE NEW ORGANIZATION WAS HELD ON JUNE 6, 7 AND 8, 1947.
THERE WERE 35 IN ATTENDANCE ON THAT RIDE AND THE RECORDS INDICATE
THAT THE TOTAL COST OF THE RIDE WAS $531.41.  IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE
THAT THE PRACTICE OF HAVING A COMMITTEE HANDLE THE DETAILS OF A RIDE
AND HAVING ONE OR TWO MEMBERS HOST THE REGULAR MONTHLY MEETINGS
WAS ESTABLISHED AT AN EARLY DATE.

A NOTE AFTER ONE OF THE EARLY RIDES SUGGESTS THAT THE RIDERS WANT
HEAVY MEALS;  MEAT, POTATOES AND SALAD IS WHAT THEY WANTED, AND
PLENTY OF IT!  A NOTE UNDERLINED IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE JUNE
9TH RIDE IN 1948 STATES, "RESERVATIONS
MUST BE IN BY JUNE 2ND."  AFTER
THESE MANY YEARS, WE STILL HAVE THAT SAME PROBLEM!

THE HISTORY OF RWR IS RICH IN THE WORTHWHILE THINGS AND EXPERIENCES
OF THE GOOD LIFE.  THE PAST FADES INTO WONDERFUL MEMORIES WHILE THE
FUTURE SHINES BRIGHT WITH REFLECTIONS ON THE ONE HAND AND
EXPECTATIONS AND CHALLENGES ON THE OTHER.
